چکیده

Exotic species are invading new ecosystems faster than has ever occurred via natural processes (Mack et al., 2000), homogenizing the world’s biota and leading to significant ecological and economic impacts (Wilcove et al., 1998; Pimentel et al., 2005). It has long been hypothesized that invasions are biased towards introduced species that are unrelated to the recipient community. Darwin’s Naturalization Hypothesis (DNH, Darwin, 1859), for example, posits that more distantly related Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, 647 Contees Wharf Road, Edgewater, MD 21037, USA, Department of Biological Sciences, Florida International University, 3000 NE 151st St, Miami, FL 33181, USA, Department of Integrative Biology, University of South Florida, 4202 East Fowler Avenue, Tampa, FL 33620, USA, Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, University of Minnesota, 1987 Upper Buford Circle, St. Paul, MN 55108, USA

Plant sex and the evolution of plant defenses against herbivores.

Despite the importance of plant-herbivore interactions to the ecology and evolution of terrestrial ecosystems, the evolutionary factors contributing to variation in plant defenses against herbivores remain unresolved. We used a comparative phylogenetic approach to examine a previously untested hypothesis (Recombination-Mating System Hypothesis) that posits that reduced sexual reproduction limit...

Biogeographic and phylogenetic effects on feeding resistance of generalist herbivores toward plant chemical defenses.

Many terrestrial and most marine herbivores have generalist diets, yet the role that evolutionary history plays in their foraging behaviors is poorly documented. On tropical hard-bottom reefs, generalist fishes and sea urchins readily consume seaweeds that produce lipophilic secondary metabolites. In contrast, herbivores on temperate reefs less commonly encounter seaweeds with analogous metabol...

Response of pest control by generalist predators to local‐scale plant diversity: a meta‐analysis

Disentangling the effects of plant diversity on the control of herbivores is important for understanding agricultural sustainability. Recent studies have investigated the relationships between plant diversity and arthropod communities at the landscape scale, but few have done so at the local scale. We conducted a meta-analysis of 32 papers containing 175 independent measures of the relationship...

Specialist and generalist herbivores exert opposing selection on a chemical defense.

* Plant defense traits often show high levels of genetic variation, despite clear impacts on plant fitness. This variation may be partly maintained by trade-offs in the defense against multiple herbivore species, for example between generalists and coevolved specialists. Despite a long-standing discussion in the literature on the subject, no study to date has specifically manipulated specialist...

Influences of Plant Traits on Immune Responses of Specialist and Generalist Herbivores

Specialist and generalist insect herbivore species often differ in how they respond to host plant traits, particularly defensive traits, and these responses can include weakened or strengthened immune responses to pathogens and parasites. Accurate methods to measure immune response in the presence and absence of pathogens and parasites are necessary to determine whether susceptibility to these ...
